Making a Film

If you’ve been itching to make a horror movie, now is the perfect time! Frugal Film Projects is hosting the “Do It!” No Budget Short Horror Film Challenge. It is the perfect excuse to get out there and make your horror film a reality.

I speak from experience when I say that sometimes, without a challenge like this, I might not even make a film. That’s why I love this challenge so much! It pushes me to do what I love—working on my craft, creating, and telling stories through film.

We all have excuses. “I’m too busy,” “The time isn’t right,” “I don’t have a big budget,” “My camera isn’t good enough,” or “I’ll just do it next year.” The list goes on. But this challenge is your chance to set those excuses aside and just go for it.

So, if you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it! Get out there and make your movie this year. Frugal Film Projects’ No Budget “Do It!” Short Horror Film Challenge is an incredible opportunity to unleash your creativity and join a community of filmmakers. I can’t wait to see what our frugal filmmakers come up with for this challenge. Don’t miss out. Register for the “Do It!” Challenge, get filming, and show us what you’ve got!

Just “Do It!”

Just "Do It!"

And, speaking of just “Do It!” Here is a great motivational speech by Art Williams, the founder of A.L. Williams in the 1980s. Although his speech is about the business world, it is applicable to everyday challenges, including filmmaking.  Take a look at it (it’s only five minutes long), then fill out the Google form below and join the Frugal Film Projects’ No Budget “Do It!” Short Horror Film Challenge today and get started!  Just “Do It!”

Three Phases

The Frugal Film Projects’ No Budget “Do It!” Short Horror Film Challenge 2024 will roll out in three phases:

Phase 1: Filmmakers register for the challenge via the Google Form below. They include a logline and begin writing their script immediately. (The logline can be generic or working. Filmmakers are free to change it at any time.)

Phase 2: The challenge officially begins once at least 10 participants register their logline. Filmmakers will then have 30 days to complete their film for the “Do It” Challenge.

Phase 3: Filmmakers make and post their film on YouTube by the deadline and provide the committee with the YouTube link.

Contest Rules

Rule 1:  The film must be between 5 and 15 minutes long.

Rule 2: The film must mention “Upper Saddle River, NJ” somewhere in the film.  It can be spoken or written anywhere in the film, but it must appear in the film.

Rule 3: The film must be submitted by the deadline via upload to YouTube, and the link must be supplied to the committee.

Judging Criteria

Films will be judged by the participating filmmakers (One filmmaker or filmmaking team per film will rank) for (1) Best Film and the Committee will rank the (2) Least expensive films to produce based on the budgets supplied by the filmmakers.

  1. Best Film: Filmmakers will rank their top three choices for best film.  (Filmmakers cannot include their film in their ranking.)
  2. Least Expensive Film: Each filmmaker will include the budget for their film in the credits.  The Committee will award points based on the amount of money spent to make the film as per the following criteria:

            1 point: $0-$499

            2 points: $500-$999

            3 points: $1000+

The film with the lowest number of total points will be awarded “Best Film” for the “Do it!” Challenge. Based on the above criteria, the winner will be…

“The cheapest film that we liked the most!”

Live Streamed Virtual YouTube Film Festival

All films will be live-streamed live at a virtual film festival. Filmmakers, their friends, and their families can watch the films together. At the conclusion of the virtual film festival, the winner of “Best Film” will be announced.
